Prune Juice

What is Prune Juice?

Most of us have a grandparent who has advocated the benefits of prune juice but what exactly is it? Well simply put, a prune is a dried plum. The prune retains all the nutrients of plums which includes being a great energy source and not contributing to spikes in blood sugar levels.

These dried plums are then crushed to fine particles and then dissolved in hot water. They are then strained which removes the skin, seeds and pits. The result is prune juice!

Prune juice benefits

There are several great benefits that can come with consumption of this products. The prune juice benefits include:

  • It provides a laxative benefit that can relieve constipation. Perhaps the most well-known advantage of this product relates to its effectiveness in relieving constipation. Prune juice for constipation has been a well-known remedy since our grandparents and great grandparents were kids. This is due to the large fiber content in this product, most in the form of soluble fiber. The usefulness of soluble fiber is that it can help increase the size of your stool which triggers improved bowel movement. This increased movement is aided by the presence of sorbitol, a sugar that also acts as a laxative. The combination of soluble fiber and sorbitol is how prune juice can naturally treat constipation.
  • It is a great source of iron. Iron is important for the transmission of oxygen from the lungs to other areas of the body. This makes the product ideal for those at risk of anemia such as vegans and vegetarians who may be lacking in iron from other food sources.
  • It can prevent heart disease. Due to the high level of antioxidants in this product, LDL cholesterol levels can be reduced which can improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart disease.
