Tigernut Flour

What is Tigernut Flour

Tigernut flour is derived from the acclaimed superfood alternately called tigernut, nut grass, yellow nuts edge or edible galingale. Tigernut is a tuber that grows from the chufa sedge plant.

The flour is obtained by first roasting the tubers and then grinding the roasted roots into  powder. While not strictly comparable to wheat flour it can still be added to baked goods or used as a thickening agent for gravies,  soups or stews. It also makes a useful flavouring addition to  many foods ranging from jam to ice cream.

Tigernut flour is becoming increasingly popular as it is gluten free and paleo diet friendly.

What does tigernut flour taste like?

The tigernut tuber has a distinctive but mild, slightly nutty flavor. As with many root vegetables it has a sweet earthy taste.
This translates across to the flour which  is slightly sweeter grain flours. This sweetness is attributable to the natural sugars contained in the tuber. For best baking results it is recommended that tigernut flour be mixed with another with another non-wheat  flour.
